From the President
To Be Continued...

As a kid, I loved to watch TV with my family on Sunday night. Sunday was usually our steak and potatoes night. Steak and potatoes night is where I learned to love T-bone steak and lots of butter on my baked potato. Before dinner, my dad would position our little TV at the end of the dinner table so we could watch a show together while we ate dinner. These were memorable times for me as a kid. Sometimes we watched the Wide World of Sports where we would witness “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat” as declared by the announcer at the start of the program. Other times we’d watch “Gun Smoke”, “The High Chaparral”, or “Batman”. We loved all of the shows and the food was great!

One thing my brother and sisters and I hated more than anything was when sometimes at the end of the show we would see those 3 dreaded words, “to be continued . . .” When those words came up on the screen we would all yell at the TV as if the TV could do anything to change things. “Are you kidding me?! What a rip off!” we would declare.  We wanted a conclusion to the story not a notification that the story was half told. Every other show concluded within the allotted hour, but we had to wait another week to find out how this story ended. Not fair! We could no longer trust that show. What if we could not “tune in” next week or if we were out of town? Didn’t the show producers care how we felt?  If they were going to make us wait a whole week to know how the story ends, we’d find another show to watch! The thing is, we never did look for another show. Mom told us to be patient and that we’d watch next week. Mom was right, life went on and we were back a week later glued to the TV to find out how the story ended. How did we ever survive that week?

Many things we hear relative to the Pandemic feel like the dreaded “to be continued . . .” message at the end of a half-completed TV show. It seems like we are getting mixed messages. Some sources say the “show” will end soon. Some say it will last through 2021. Others say the world will never be rid of Covid-19. We might hear that there is a vaccine coming out in October. No, change that to February. Wait, perhaps in Summer 2021 or maybe never. Two things are certain; first, no one knows for sure when or if things will get back to normal, and second, this is not a TV show intended to keep you coming back, it’s a Pandemic. Nonetheless, the message we are receiving is “to be continued . . .” and we must therefore continue on and be patient.

What does “being patient” mean? Does that mean we sit in front of the TV wishing the week would pass quickly? No! Does it mean that we go back to bed and wish it were all a dream? Not hardly. It means we carry on and do whatever it takes to be successful and productive. We all have many things that we need and want to do and there is no real reason to stop everything and wait. Being patient, using the terminology of business expert and Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen, means we “pivot”. Pivoting does not mean we start over or that we throw away the progress we have made. Pivoting means we adjust to the current situation and figure out what works. I love seeing how people pivot and innovate during tough times. We can look all around and witness how many businesses have adapted and continue to adapt. We can see how families have had to pivot and change the way they do things.  We can all see how CSTC has adapted to a new way of doing business and in the meantime learned new valuable skills.

No matter what the news or “sources” say about the pandemic, or for that matter, anything else that disrupts our lives, we must press forward and sometimes “pivot” so we can continue to be productive, successful, and serve others. We can expect to keep seeing the message “to be continued . . . “ in the future. Let that message be an inspiration to you to “press forward” and be OK with whatever adjustments you are making in your business, family, and personal life.

Let me personally thank each one of you for continuing to serve CSTC and its members in whatever capacity you serve. I am inspired by your example of hard work and dedication to family, friends, and associates.

Thank you!

Your friend,

Gary Quackenbush, CSTC President

The Future of the CSTC Academy

The CSTC Academy debuted this year with our first-ever webinars on the courses from the Summer Symposium. Having successfully completed this first series of webinars – The Summer Symposium Series – we are now looking to keep the momentum going by continuing to promote the Academy, which includes all of our various education events.

In furtherance of this goal, we are going to begin marketing the chapter meetings under the CSTC Academy mailings. The chapters will still hold the meetings and market to chapter members as usual, but we will add an additional marketing effort by promoting the meetings through the CSTC Academy. In reality, all CSTC education will be more effective when marketed under a single brand.

Chapters who are holding webinars are often experiencing higher attendance at webinars than at live meetings, which has resulted in higher revenue for these chapters. They are also finding that members from across the state attend their webinars, bringing additional value to CSTC membership.

You will begin seeing the emails shortly, where we will advertise “This Week in the CSTC Academy” and then list the chapter meetings/webinars.

We look forward to working together with the chapters to promote the chapter education as yet another part of our CSTC Academy of outstanding education.

Linda Dong
Summer Symposium Chair
