Part One: Casualty and Theft Losses
Did you think Casualty and theft losses were gone? Well, they aren’t, just with new restrictions and some new benefits. We will discuss the federal rules for personal and business Casualty and theft losses on the federal return and review the rules for California, which remain with the same old rules.

Part Two: Net Operating Losses
When a preparer hears the term NOL, a lot are intimidated by it. We will go in depth on what creates an NOL, how to identify one and once identified, a taxpayer's options. We will discuss carry forwards, carry backs, methodology of how to apply a carry back, who still qualifies for a carry back and review California rules.

Eugene Ostermiller, EA, NTPI
Eugene started doing taxes 23 years ago at H and R Block. After 8 years at Block, he formed Tax Matters Inc. in San Francisco with 2 partners, a business that they sold in 2014. He then moved to Sonora CA and opened ERO Tax in 2015. He passed the EA exam in 2001 and has been a speaker for over 15 years.
