Topic: 

This session will explain the multiple tax advantages of Health Savings Accounts and how taxpayers can maximize their tax savings by participating in these accounts. Employers that offer Health Savings Accounts to their employees can also realize significant tax savings. The speakers will discuss who can benefit from Health Savings Accounts and how they can realize the most tax savings, both in the short-term and the long-term. Panelists will compare and contrast Health Savings Accounts with Individual Retirement Accounts, which share many similarities, and describe why Health Savings Accounts should be used as a complementary strategy for planning for retirement.

Lawrence Pon is a Certified Public Accountant, Personal Financial Specialist, Certified Financial Planner, Enrolled Agent, United States Tax Court Practitioner, and Accredited Estate Planner in Redwood Shores, CA. He has been in practice since 1986 and speaks regularly to tax professionals on the latest tax planning and preparation topics. Mr. Pon received his BS in Business Administration from UC Berkeley and MS in Taxation from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. Mr. Pon is a long-time member of CSTC, NAEA, CSEA, AICPA, and CalCPA. He can be reached at www.larryponcpa.com.

 

Roy Ramthun, Nationally-recognized expert on Health Savings Accounts and consumer-directed health care issues
Roy Ramthun is a nationally-recognized expert on Health Savings Accounts and consumer-directed health care issues. He led the U.S. Treasury Department's implementation of HSAs after they were enacted into law in 2003. President George W. Bush then tapped Mr. Ramthun to be his health care policy advisor at the White House, where he developed the President's proposals to expand HSAs while overseeing the implementation of the Medicare prescription drug benefit (Part D). As Founder and President of HSA Consulting Services, LLC, he continues to be an advocate for consumerism in health care and is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars around the country. Mr. Ramthun has over 30 years of health care and public policy experience, both in government and in the private sector. He has served on the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance and the U.S. Health Care Financing Administration (now known as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services). He also spent eight years with Humana Inc. and two years leading the West Health Policy Center. Mr. Ramthun holds a Master of Science degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan. A native of Michigan, Mr. Ramthun and his family live in Silver Spring, MD (a suburb of Washington, DC). They have had an HSA since 2005.
