S hannon Hall: California has always been known for being non-conformist, and the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act gave us plenty of opportunities to prove it! Rec ent legislation gave us some conformity, but we still have lots of work to do. We’ll explore the new expanded Schedule CA using a case-study tax retur n to highlight the differences between Federal and California taxes, as wel l as how and where to report them.
Michae l R. Mergen, EA – grew up in Norwalk, California. Graduated with a BA in Business Administration & Accounting from Cal State Fullerton, i n 1982. Became an enrolled agent in 2012. Practices in Placentia. Past pres ident of the Orange chapter of CSTC and is currently the chapter’s treasure r.
Shannon Hall, EA - spent three years studying cla ssical theatre at an acting conservatory, so it was only a matter of time b efore she got into the tax business. She has been a member of CSTC since sh e began preparing taxes all the way back in 2012, though her tax career tru ly began many years before when, as a child, she would play with the tax fo rms in the library. Shannon has prepared taxes at respected places like her kitchen table and H&R Block, where she served as an instructor and off ice manager before moving in with some laid back CPAs in Signal Hill, CA. M ore than anything, Shannon hopes to make tax education engaging and fun and strives to make taxes less taxing.
