Topic:

How many of your clients have a revocable living trust? As tax return preparers, we can often separate ourselves from our clients’ personal estate planning. But, the structure of their basic estate plan can have critical impact on their personal income tax returns. The impact becomes even more dramatic for clients who have done advanced estate planning in order to make gifts, transfer businesses, plan for paying estate taxes, provide themselves with asset protection, or otherwise maximize wealth and plan for the future. John K. Bishop, a California attorney practicing in the areas of estate planning and tax law, will be presenting on “Estate Planning and Taxes: How these two fields of law intersect, and what it means for your clients”. John will begin with an overview of the considerations clients make in preparing a basic estate plan: revocable trust, Will, Financial Power of Attorney, and Healthcare Directive. John will then give a flavor of many of the advanced estate planning techniques that are available to clients wanting to make lifetime gifts or generational dynasty trusts, minimize estate tax exposure, or transfer a family business with minimized income tax impact. John’s presentation will have a bend toward the tax impact and tax considerations, leading attendees to understand when they should advise clients on certain transactions and when they should call in an outside expert.
