Internal Revenue Service resources for Small Business Owners

This message is to let you know that the Service is conducting a new outreach and education campaign for small business owners, but specifically targeting new Schedule C filers. Small Business/Self-Employed research has shown us that there are two things that commonly trip up small business owners, particularly new ones, when it comes to determining their federal tax liabilities: (1) Poor Recordkeeping and (2) Incorrectly determining Business Income.
Our goal is to deliver educational material on these two topics from all of our resources: (1) IRS.gov, (2) Virtually - Videos/Webinars, (3) Publications and (4) Social Media. Our outreach resources are limited, so we are coming to you for help in delivering our outreach to small business owners because many are your clients. Please see the attached document “IRS Resources for Entrepreneurs,” which summarizes our resources for small business owners. It also provides specific resource information for the Recordkeeping and Understanding Gross Business Receipts issues.
Please take some time to review the material. If you feel that this information would be valuable to your organization's members and thus their clients, then we encourage you to share the attached resource document with them. Some ideas at the individual practitioner level in getting this information to clients are: (1) Send via E-Mail, (2) Post on your web server with a link on your website, (3) Post to your social media site, if you have one – whatever you think works best for you and your clients.

I'd like to hear from you and your organization's members, especially if you decide to share this information. Please reply to this message if you are interested in discussing some ideas on how to make your members more aware of the various resources the IRS has available (after the filing season is fine - I know you're all busy). In addition to distributing the attached document directly to clients, other ideas include establishing IRS links, such as our Online Tax Calendar, on your website and having your clients subscribe to IRS e-News for Small Business.

Thanks for your consideration. By working together through outreach and education, I know we can help business owners succeed.
